Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using such treatments must be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
