The Trump phenomenon's most telling and defining moments – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of a few weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall twice the size than the White House and then began independently demolishing the eastern section to build it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to USAID stands at 600,000 and growing, and recently an analysis projected his fossil fuel policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have dared – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – unilaterally destroying large sections of the White House to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of multiple the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which have business with the government.

As confusing as it is to witness the chief executive seek to颠覆 the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who might not perceive it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of hostility who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this change developed more gradually, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Savior that I grew up with, as conceptually Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre among Americans may possess limited understanding of him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; but I do think that exist valuable insights of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is emphatically not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; conversely, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The child matures in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his message concerns compassion for others, especially for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to offer the other cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a way to educate the assailant; his method regarding offenses is that if a person pilfers your jacket you ought to provide the person your additional clothing too.
The apparent and direct reality that Christ from scripture advocates for a form of radical love concentrated on the poor has consistently rendered Christian religion something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but because of its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. In the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – Protestantism was so dominant that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Highest of Us
So I have been encouraged to see the determined opposition to Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has been substantial consolation to participate in developing the initiative that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags at every demonstration and calls to the best parts in US history.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you welcome them and welcome him or not?
The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by relationship to the highest about American history, similar to Christianity is best defended through connection to that which renders it special and magnificent, specifically the model of Christ. In neither case does it imply feigning the most damaging regarding America and Christianity never occurred; it represents both modesty and faith, a blend that committed national faithful ought to accept.
