A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national works. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
